Different Types of Connectors Used in Singapore

Type 1: the first plug-type to appear in Singapore; these have been replaced by Type 2 as the standard for Singapore EV for AC charging.

Type 2: the Singapore standard EV plug design, used by charging networks nationwide.

CCS: “Combined Charging System”. A plug consisting Type 1 and Type 2 connectors, with two additional direct current (DC) contacts to allow high-power fast charging.

CHAdeMO: abbreviation of the French “CHArge de MOve”; a DC-specific fast charging plug used by Japanese manufacturers.

More information about Combined Charging System (CCS)

The Combined Charging System (CCS) is a standard for charging EV which uses the Combo 1 and Combo 2 connectors to provide power at up to 350 kW. These two connectors are extensions of the Type 1 and Type 2 connectors, with two additional DC contacts to allow high-power DC fast charging. CCS connector can supply between 25 kWh and 350 kWh of power. For most EVs, this is enough to charge from zero to 80% in under an hour.

More information about CHAdeMO

CHAdeMO is the trade name of DC fast charging method for EV delivering up to 62.5 kW by 500 V, 125 A DC via a special electrical connector. A revised CHAdeMO 2.0 specification allows for up to 400 kW by 1000 V, 400 A DC.

Optimal at 80%

Car battery typically follows what it is called a “charging curve” when charging. Charging generally will starts slow while your car will monitor several external factors like the weather ambiance. It will climb to peak speeds for as long as possible and slows down again around 80% to prolong battery life.

Using a DC fast charger will be ideal to stop charging when the car battery reaches about 80% full. That is when charging will start to slow down its speed. In some cases, it could take almost as long to fill the last 20% of charge as it did to get to 80% in the first place.
